Book Tag

I've been book tagged by Millie. What a fun tag, and for me it could be something new everyday. However, in order to preserve what little reading time I have, and in order to maintain your sanity (and loyalty), dear blog readers, I will refrain from posting a book tag daily. (If any of you need a list of good books to read, or want to share your list, I am always happy to oblige.)

Directions:

1. Get the nearest book to you, or one that you are reading, that contains over 123 pages.

2. Go to the 123rd page.

3. Find the 5th sentence.

4. Post the 5th sentence.

5. Tag 5 people.

"LeAnn had finally appeared and was standing over the fruit salad, snitching strawberries off the top."

I am reading "Beyond Perfection" by Juli Caldwell and Erin McBride. This book is a modern-day, Latter Day Saint version of "Pride and Prejudice". It is a cute book, and really fun for me to read since it was co-authored by a girl I went to High School with, and a large portion of the book is set in the good old town where I grew up. It is really fun to read a book where you actually know all of the landmarks. And for those of you that may have already read the book, I did indeed drag the "Vard".

And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for...I tag Mandy, Lindsay, Heidi, Virginia, Jennie, and Brooke. (Ha ha. I chose six!)

So You Think You Can Dance

I am so excited! When summer is on it's way, it is time for my favorite show to start up again. I LOVE "So You Think You Can Dance". Tonight was the season premiere and it definitely did not disappoint! Tonight they showed the L.A. auditions. There are some seriously delusional people out there. For me, watching the auditions is like being on a roller coaster. When they show all the people who don't make it through to the next round, I am convinced that, yes, I can dance. Then they show the dancers who make it through to Vegas, and I know that I can't dance.

However, the fact that I now know that I can't dance does not stop me from feeling like a qualified judge. I could totally guest judge for the show tomorrow, and no one would notice a difference between me, Mary, Mia, etc. So, with the inability to achieve my dream of being a professional dancer, I will sit on my couch two nights a week for the next two months and be a "professional" judge.

P.S. Don't worry...I have other dreams, too!

P.P.S. There, Mom, just for you. Two posts in one night to make up for my blog dereliction! Love you!!!

Rockin' Robin

My cute little niece, Breklin has been taking dance classes for a few months. When I found out that her class was using "Rockin' Robin" for their recital, all I could think of was the episode of "The Office" where Andy records his own voice singing "Rockin' Robin" as the ringtone on his cell phone and Jim hides his phone in the ceiling. Click here to watch the clip. (It's one of my favorite "Office" moments.)

Now when I hear that song, I think of a bunch of cute little girls in yellow feathers! Here are a few pictures from Breklin's first recital.

Breklin...pre-makeup. She definitely has a performance smile!

Kambrie peeks over the seats.
Breklin is all ready for the show.

Aunt Misty and Breklin
And I just have to throw this one in because it's so funny. This is Kambrie, giving me her picture smile while we wait for Breklin to finish her dance class.

The recital was so fun to watch, and Breklin is a GREAT dancer. She was definitely the best in her group. And if you thought she looked excited before the recital, you should have seen her after it. She was so wound up that she couldn't hold still, and at one point she took off running up the aisle and toward the door. As the person standing closest to her at the moment, I took off running full speed up the aisle after her. If the poor man I took down on the way happens to be reading this, I'm really, really sorry about that! I hope you're okay. I think the number of children I want to have just dropped again! I don't have enough energy anymore.

Seriously though, I love all my darling nieces, my handsome nephew, and all of my "adopted" nieces and nephews. I'll come play with you anytime!!!

I have to move!!!

That was the first thing I half-hysterically yelled to Heidi when I got home from church on Sunday. Let me start at the beginning.

I arrived at church just a couple of minutes before Sacrament Meeting started, so I slipped into the overflow and sat on the inside isle of an empty row, kindly leaving room closer to the door for anyone who might come in a little late. A few minutes later, a couple came in and took the seats closest to the door, so there were two empty seats between us. No one else sat there, so after the sacrament was over, I set my scriptures and small hymn book on the seat next to me. I sat and enjoyed all of the meeting (it was fast Sunday) until 2:05pm. Yes, that's right. My ward starts at 1:00pm, so testimony meeting is supposed to wind down around 2:05. There were still about three people waiting to bear their testimonies, and I was really enjoying the meeting, so I wasn't bothered by that fact...yet.

Suddenly and quite literally out of nowhere, a man was standing at my shoulder and said, "Can I sit there?" As I nodded my assent I was thinking "why didn't he just wait in the foyer for another three minutes?" He stepped across me and I assumed he would take the empty seat next to the couple, but he stood in front of the chair next to me until I moved my books, and then he sat down very, very close to me. At that point I was a little uncomfortable, which was strange since I normally don't have a weird reaction to a stranger sitting next to me in church. Little did I know that it was about to get even more strange!

As the next person got up and started bearing their testimony, the man next to me started murmuring in what I swear was a different language. I should pause here to mention that I had not really looked at the man, except to notice that he had a full, dark beard as he stepped past me. So when he started mumbling in a foreign language, and I could see out of the corner of my eye that he was staring at me, my extremely overactive imagination took over. I started thinking that maybe my neighbor was a terrorist and was going to bomb the church. Then I imagined that he was suddenly going to put a knife to my throat and drag me out of the building. Now, I know you are thinking that I was really pushing the extremes of reality here, but you should know that my "creep radar" was humming loudly, and no matter how hard I prayed, I could not settle down and feel peace.

So, there I was staring at the pulpit so as not to make eye contact with the starer, and trying to think how I was going to get away from him the second the meeting ended. I thought about just gathering up my stuff and leaving, but I thought that would look really rude since he had just sat down (and I was half afraid he would follow me anyway). Finally, the last person sat down, the Bishop announced the closing hymn, and I picked up my little mini hymnbook.

Just as I reached the correct hymn number, the stalking lion next to me reached over me, grabbed my book and leaned practically all his weight on me. As if he couldn't sit up on his own power!!! After he had done that, he asked if he could share my book. Well how do you say no at that point? So I made some non-committal noise, and started singing. Never have I been so grateful for a short closing hymn! I'm sure at that point you could visibly see the waves of tension rising from my body. Finally the song ended, the prayer was said, and before I could grab my primary bag, my new "friend" had grabbed my hand, said his name and asked mine. I couldn't think of how to get around telling him my name, so I very quietly told him my name. To my great relief, after shaking my hand four different times, and telling me twice that we "should see each other again really soon!", he left.

Needless to say, I was a bundle of nerves at that point, as I quickly made my way to the primary room, all the while checking over my shoulder to be sure he wasn't following behind me. I sat down on my row, and tried to resume breathing. As I was trying to regain some composure before being faced with a bunch of excited four-year-olds, the primary president came to me and said "I was sitting right behind you. You can't ever sit alone again!" I asked her who that guy was, and she smiled sympathetically and said she would tell me later.

After church was over, I saw the president in the hall, and she just started laughing. She informed me that she believes my new "pal" purposely comes late to church and he will stand at the back to scan the room for the one woman sitting by herself and then he will go sit next to her. She said that sometimes he'll even get to the woman, see she has a ring or something, and then scan the room again before finding a "suitable seat". She told me that she was so uncomfortable for me, and had even considered leaning forward and asking me to come with her to the primary room. (How I wish she had!) She said that when he grabbed my book, she even leaned over to her husband and exclaimed over his presumptuousness. (That's not exactly how she put it, but it gives you a good idea of what she said). She finished the conversation by telling me that from now on, I need to plan in advance who I am going to sit by in church.

I feel like a small animal that is about to become dinner for some stealthy predator. And that is why I have to move! People wonder why I'm not married....yeah, me too! ;)

Bad Luck...

Boy do I have some! Let me start at the beginning. When it is my week to teach my CTR 5 class, I usually end up putting the finishing touches on my lesson Sunday morning before church, which is at 1:00pm. Then I am usually in a huge rush to get ready for church and get there on time. As usual, I was in a huge rush today. And that is where our story begins.

I was pushing it to make it to church before Sacrament Meeting started, and as I pulled out of the driveway and onto the street, I realized, with no small amount of horror, that my car had a flat tire. I pulled the car to the side of the road right there, jumped out, and saw that one of my rear tires was completely flat...we're talking rim-rubbing-the-road flat! I grabbed my primary bag, and walked quickly back to my house. My sweet roommate, Heidi, saved the day and ran me to church.
After church, I was advised by my dad to change the tire right then, before it got dark, so that I wouldn't be out there on the busy street changing the tire in the morning. So I changed into sweats, and walked back up the street to change the tire. Because of the way my car was parked, there wasn't a lot of room between my rear tire and the curb, so as I was jacking the car up, I skinned my knuckles on the curb several times. Then, when Heidi came out to keep me company (and to call an ambulance if my luck got much worse), she informed me that I had sat in some mud, and had a big mud spot on my fandango. After a brief investigation, I was disappointed (to say the least) to find that the substance I had been sitting in was not, in fact, mud but was actually dog poop. What could I do at that point besides lay back on the sidewalk and laugh...mostly so I wouldn't cry. At least I got the donut put on my car and moved it back into my parking lot. Now I get to look forward to starting my week by going to get my tire fixed. YEA!!! I can't wait!

I want to pause my story here to say thank you to Heidi for dropping everything to take me to church, for her moral support, and for laughing with me while I displayed my dog poop spot to the neighborhood as I finished changing my tire. I also want to say a HUGE thank you to my dad for teaching me at sixteen how to do small car repairs, check all my car's fluid levels, jump start a car, and change a tire. Those skills have come in handy many times as I've lived out on my own, both for my own car and for the cars of friends and co-workers. THANKS, DADDY!!!

Okay, back to my story. I have come to the conclusion that April is a bad month for my car. I didn't manage to get any pictures of my experience today, but here are a couple of pictures of what my car looked like last year in April after my neighbor hit it with his motorcycle.

I just realized that both "April incidents" happened on Sunday. Hmm. Not sure what that means. Next year I'm going to consider renting a car for the month of April and hide mine away somewhere secure!

Girls' Weekend

Mom, Dayna, Mandy, and Jade came down to Provo this weekend to play. On Friday night, we went out to dinner at a favorite place of ours, Zupas. After that we had tickets to the BYU Ballroom Dance Show. It was so fabulous! I really loved most of the dances and it made me really miss dancing!!! During one of the dances they showed a picture of a rose that was really weird. It reminded me of an Australian Frilled Lizard. Click on this link to see a You Tube video of one running. It's one of the funniest things you'll ever see! Needless to say, Dayna and I were both in tears by the end of the dance. I can't remember one darn thing about that dance, because I couldn't stop looking at the stupid rose in the background. It was hilarious!

On Saturday morning, I had to teach a CPR and First Aid class, but as it turns out, I didn't miss much of the party, since the other girls spent that time getting ready and checking out of the hotel. We met up at Brick Oven for lunch, then we did some shopping. I bought a new digital camera in anticipation of my upcoming vacations, but I didn't take one picture during the girls' weekend. After shopping, we went to see the new Emma Smith movie. I highly recommend it! It was so good, and I learned something new about Emma. I'm not going to tell you what...you'll just have to see the movie for yourself, and then we can talk. After the movie, the girls headed back up north. It was really fun, and I was sad to see them leave!

On an unrelated note, here's a story from my primary class. The lesson today was about preparing for baptism. The other teacher was giving the kids different situations, and they were supposed to say whether or not it was a good way to prepare to be baptized. One was "being bossy". One little boy said "No! That means you're a bad spirit!" We couldn't help but laugh. To all my fellow bossy people out there...I'm starting a "change your spirit" support group! I love little kids. They are so candid and funny!!!

Another Wild Weekend

Whatever happened to the idea that the weekend was to rest up from the work week? My weekends are every bit as busy as my weekdays. Following in this trend, last weekend was super fun and way exhausting!

My cute little niece, Breklin, came to spend the weekend with me while her parents were out of town. On Friday, we went to the park by my house. We had a great time, until I fell over a very poorly planned steel balance beam and got the biggest bump/bruise on my shin. You know, one of those where it's so bad the color doesn't even show up until five days later.
On Saturday, we went shopping, had an early lunch and went to see "Horton Hears A Who". It was fun to see the movie, and it's been a really long time since Breklin sat on my lap for an hour and a half! (In case you're wondering, it's also been a really long time since I got up at 5:20am. I thought little kids were supposed to sleep in on Saturdays!)

Sunday, Breklin came into my room at 6:45am. I could tell she wasn't really awake, so I pulled her up into bed with me, hoping she would go back to sleep. Somehow I don't think twin beds were made for more than one person. We were very squished. After I'd been laying on my side on the edge of the bed for awhile, my back was hurting and I decided to roll onto my back. As I was rolling over, the following conversation occured:
Breklin: Misty, you're going to push me right off the bed. (She was on the side against the wall.) Scoot over!
Misty: I'm laying on the very edge. If I scoot over, I'll fall off the bed. I'm sorry.
Breklin: It's because your body is thick!
How do you not laugh at that, even if your feelings are a little hurt? :) Guess it's time to start up the diet again!!!
